Layer Up!
It's that time of year in the South. . .
My apologies to those of you in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic—your clothing layers (read: Stay Puft Marshmallow Man) look much different than ours right now. I recognize this post might be more aspirational than practical for you at the moment.
Our family woke up to temps in the mid-40s this morning and is currently enjoying breezy 70s: perfect weather for light layers. Below, I’m sharing recent layering outfits Rowan and I created, all using two t-shirts, three long-sleeved button-ups, and the same pair of jeans. All three shirts work with both tees and either belt or pair of shoes. In the captions, where I link to each piece, I’ve noted whether it's from the men’s, women’s, or boys’ section.
Finding clothes that fit Rowan’s preferences wasn’t difficult when she was younger. Around age 4, she made it clear she wasn’t interested in “dressing like a girl,” but clothing from the boys’ section fit her just as well as girls’ options. That changed when she turned 12. Finding masculine-leaning clothes that fit her young lady’s figure became a challenge—and one of my main goals for this newsletter is to help other parents and teens learn from our process of cobbling together a section-agnostic wardrobe that helps Rowan feel like herself.
I’ve included pieces from two of our favorite gender-neutral brands: Tomboyx and Androgynous Fox. Both are (mostly) affordably priced — especially during sales — and we’ve been very pleased with the quality. Across other brands, you'll notice that items from women's sections have a more masculine cut but are designed for the female silhouette.
As this is my first post on "All of a Kind Style," please bear with me as I develop my flat-lay photography, Canva, and Substack editing skills. I like to think of myself as technology-fluent, but there's definitely a learning curve here. My children's skills have surpassed my own—many thanks to Rivi for rescuing my Substack account when I thought I'd deleted it.
I’m excited to be here, and I look forward to your feedback and ideas.
